The Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center is a comprehensive, multi disciplinary breast care program, offering a full spectrum of clinical and support services, from screening and diagnosis to treatment and counseling. The Center provides innovative, integrated, high quality and cost-effective care.

As part of the the world renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Breast Center stands at the forefront of breast cancer research and treatment. The Center's state-of-the-art technologist and highly skilled medical professionals are internationally recognized. Patients who visit the Breast Center have access to the most advanced tests and therapies available anywhere.

The prominence of the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center is reflected in both the Center's outcomes data and patient satisfaction surveys. In national survival studies, for example, the survival rates among early stage breast cancer patients at Johns Hopkins match or exceed national rates. The Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center offers has many special features that sets it apart from other institution's Breast Centers. One of these unique features is our Johns Hopkins Breast Cancer Survivor Volunteer team. These are women from all walks of life who have had breast cancer and provide one on one support to women newly diagnosed and seeking treatment with us at Hopkins.

For Patients traveling some distance for consultation and care, especially those newly diagnosed with breast cancer, come to Johns Hopkins for consultation and subsequent surgical care. After their surgery, we are able to assist them with arranging for adjuvant therapy (chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy) closer to home when such treatment is needed. If traveling some distance to us for consultation or for breast cancer surgery, the Radisson Plaza Lord Baltimore Hotel can accommodate you. Room rates are discounted for Hopkins patients to under $100 per night and free transportation to and from the hospital to the hotel is also provided by the Radisson for our patients.   Accolades and Distinctions

  Nancy Davidson, MD professor of oncology and director of breast cancer research,was cited for her contributions to the field at the annual American Association of Cancer Research, April 2008. In January 2008 she also was given the National Cancer Institute's Rosalind E. Franklin Award for Women in Cancer Research.

  Lillie Shockney, RN., BS., MAS, and Administrative Director of the Breast Center, was appointed by the Johns Hopkins Board of Trustees to the position of University Distinguished Service Assistant Professor of Breast Cancer for her accomplishments and leadership in this field as a teacher and scholar, effective March 2008.

  For the 16th year in a row, Johns Hopkins was rated as the top hospital in the U.S. News Honor Roll. Hopkins ranked third overall in cancer treatment.

  Dr. Nagi Khouri, Director of Breast Imaging at Johns Hopkins, was selected as one of the five ten women's imaging specilists in the country in 2007.   Dr. Charles Balch, professor of surgery and oncology, has received the Society of Surgical Oncology Heritage Award, 2007.

  Pedram Argani to receive the 2007 Arthur Purdy Stout Prize. Congratulations to Dr. Pedram Argani. Dr. Argani will receive the 2007 Arthur Purdy Stout Prize at the the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology meeting in San Diego. The prize recognizes significant career achievements in Surgical Pathology by young surgical pathologists whose research publications have had a major impact on diagnostic pathology. Dr. Argani will receive this prestigious award Sunday, March 25, 2007 at the meeting of the Arthur Purdy Stout Society.

  Lillie Shockney, administrative director of the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center and two-time breast cancer survivor, will be honored by the American Society of Plastic Surgery with the society’s 2006 Patients of Courage: Triumph Over Adversity Award. The award pays tribute to patients who fought through their physical and emotional hardships, are an inspiration to others and are giving back to their community. “The Patients of Courage program is a unique way for ASPS members to give thanks to those exceptional patients who have made a lasting impression on us personally and professionally,” said ASPS President, Bruce Cunningham, M.D. The award is scheduled to be presented in October during the Society’s annual meeting.

  Deborah Armstrong, M.D., associate professor of oncology, gynecology and obstetrics, has received the Ladies’ Home Journal first-annual Health Breakthrough Award. This honor recognizes leading medical professionals who are making life-saving and life-enhancing discoveries in research, diagnostics and treatment, which have significantly helped women and families. Selected from a list of nearly 100 accomplished professionals, Dr. Armstrong was honored along with six other doctors and researchers at the Health Breakthrough Awards Luncheon in New York and will be featured in the September issue of the magazine.

  Mrs. Shockney was selected by the Komen Foundation, nationally, to receive the 2005 Professor of Survivorship Award with the goal of advancing research and awareness on the issues surrounding long-term survivorship of breast cancer. Professor of Survivorship awards are made to individuals who have made significant contributions in the field of breast cancer survivorship. She will receive this award in June 2006.

  For the 15th year in a row, Johns Hopkins was rated as the top hospital in the U.S. News Honor Roll. Hopkins ranked third overall in cancer treatment.

  Lillie Shockney, our director of education and outreach, was the recipient of the 2003 Impact award from the National Consortium of Breast Centers. Each year one individual or organization is selected who has demonstrated through life time achievement having made a major and national impact in the care and treatment of women with breast cancer.

  "Best Doctors for Women Coast to Coast"--- April 2002 issue of Ladies' Home Journal showcased three of our Breast Center faculty as the best in the Northeast for Breast Specialists! They are: Dr. Nancy Davidson for medical oncology; Dr. Julie Lange for surgical oncology; Dr. Richard Zellars for radiation oncology!

  Oncology Nursing Society's 2002 Excellence in Breast Cancer Education Award goes to Lillie Shockney. Each year one oncology nurse is selected nationally for this award and the recipient this year is our own Director of Education and Outreach. The award includes a cash award of $4000 which Lillie has donated to the Johns Hopkins Breast Center to support printing costs of educational materials for patients here. Acknowledgement of this award will take place at the ONS Congress to be held in April in Washington, DC

  Lillie Shockney, R.N., B.S.N., M.A.S., director of outreach and education for the Breast Center, has received the 2001 Lane A. Adams Award for Excellence in Caring from the American Cancer Society (ACS) at its national meeting in Atlanta on June 8. The prestigious award is given annually to caregivers who demonstrate consistent excellence and innovation in providing compassionate skilled care and counsel to persons with cancer and their families. The ACS has been honoring individuals for their exemplary care for the last 15 years. Shockney was one of 11 awardees selected from nationwide nominations.

  The Johns Hopkins Breast Center, has been selected as a recipient of the highly regarded "Editor's Choice Award" from HealingWell.com. This award is reserved for select health web sites that exhibit 1) exceptional web design, 2) reliable and quality health information on disease and disorder topics, and 3) patient accessibility and support.   Johns Hopkins Breast Center Wins Two Awards in 1998 National Health Information Awards Program. "Breast Cancer-- Making the Right Chocies for You", written by Lillie Shockney, Education and Outreach Director of the Breast Center, received a Silver Award for "best consumer decision making information." The Johns Hopkins Breast Center Website was the recipient of the Bronze Award for its excellence in "Patient Education Information."

 



 


 



 

Metastatic Breast Cancer Support Group

In an effort to expand our psychosocial services to all women with metastatic disease regardless of diagnosis, the Living with Cancer Program within the Department of Patient & Family Services is currently soliciting referrals for a support group. This 12-week group would provide an opportunity for these patients to express their emotional and practical concerns within a structured, professionally co-facilitated setting.

This group will be held in the Patient & Family Services Suite, Weinberg 1210, on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., May 16 through June 20. Please forward referrals to Alice Rainess, LCSW-C (via email raineal@jhmi.edu or x5-8973) or Julie Cain, LCSW-C (via email cainju@jhmi.edu or x2-8013). A Woman's Journey, a one-day series of 44 seminars about women's health issues provides a special opportunity to learn more about breast cancer, colon and gynecologic cancers, hormone replacement therapy, nutrition, complementary medicine and many other issues of interest to women.
