Avon 3 Day Walk: May 3-5, 2002

Avon 3 Day Walk: May 3-5, 2002. The Johns Hopkins Breast Center had a huge team of survivor volunteers, family members and friends doing this event this year. We also organized a cheering squad which appeared at every pit stop and cheering station along the 62 mile route from Baltimore to Washington, DC! The cheerleaders wore pink OR scrubs and the walker wore a white Hopkins shirt one day, a pink shirt another, and navy blue on the the third day.

The first breast cancer survivor volunteer to register for our team, called "Lillie's Ladies" was Betsy Wells. Betsy helped in inspiring others to sign up and before we knew it, we had more than 48 walkers registered. Additionally there were 31 cheer leaders from our survivor volunteer team! Just 2 months before the big event, Betsy became ill and was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. We decided to make her our "virtual walker" and arranged for her to come to the Baltimore Convention Center on Thursday May 2nd for the kick off at the Hopkins booth. She was greeted by many walkers and cheerleaders, all that evening wearing pink OR scrubs from Hopkins. It was an emotional evening for everyone and reminded us of the the importance of this event and that we are doing the walk to raise research dollars for breast cancer with the ultimate goal to find a cure.... Here are the photos from this event! A special thanks to Patti Weiss, our team captain for the walkers. And also a special thanks to Judy Matthews and Pat Williford out co-captains for the cheering squad! Ladies, you are awesome!
