Syed Z. Ali, MD

Dr. Ali is a graduate of Rawalpindi Medical College, University of Punjab, Pakistan. He completed his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (1990-1994) at North Shore University Hospital - Cornell University Medical College in New York. During this time period he also served as the Chief Resident in Pathology for two years in a row. Working with Dr. Steven Hajdu during the residency years at North Shore inculcated a strong interest in him for cytopathology. He later completed a fellowship in Oncologic Surgical Pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York (1994-1995) under the preceptorship of Dr. Juan Rosai, followed by a two year fellowship in Clinical Cytopathology at Johns Hopkins with Dr. Dorothy Rosenthal (1995-1997). In 1997 he joined the Department of Pathology, Division of Cytopathology at Johns Hopkins as an Instructor on the faculty. Currently he is Assistant Professor of Pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Attending Pathologist at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Ali is board certified in Anatomic pathology, clinical pathology and cytopathology. He has numerous publications, primarily in the area of clinical diagnostic cytology and oncologic pathology. His major areas of interest have been fine-needle aspiration cytology of the breast, brain and soft tissues. Lately, he has been actively involved in numerous on-going projects in electronic image digitization and web-based tools for diagnostic and teaching purposes. Dr. Ali serves as a reviewer of three major clinical journals in his field, and lectures frequently at various national meetings.


Pedram Argani, MD

Dr. Argani is a graduate of the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine and received his pathology training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed fellowships in Oncologic Pathology and Molecular Pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where he studied under the guidance of such noted pathologists as Dr. Juan Rosai, Dr. Paul Peter Rosen, and Dr. Marc Ladanyl. Dr. Argani is board certified in Anatomic Pathology. Dr. Argani first joined the Hopkins Pathology faculty in 1997, and is now an Associate Professor of Pathology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Attending Pathologist at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is the Director of Breast Pathology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. His major areas of interest are the diagnostic pathology and molecular pathogenesis of breast cancer, particularly through the characterization of new markers of cancer. At the 2007 United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology meeting, Dr Argani received the Arthur Purdy Stout Society annual prize, given annually to a Surgical Pathologist under the age of 45 in recognition of career research achievements. Dr. Argani routinely reviews slides from patients with breast tumors who are treated here, in order to provide a second opinion. Russell Vang, MD

Dr. Vang is a graduate of The University of Texas-Southwestern Medical School and received his residency training in pathology at The University of Texas-Houston Medical School. After completing the surgical pathology fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center in California, he pursued further subspecialty training in gynecologic & breast pathology at The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) in Washington, D.C. Dr. Vang eventually took a staff position in the Dept. of GYN & Breast Pathology at the AFIP, where he was also Vice Chairman. He is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology. Dr. Vang joined the faculty at Hopkins in 2003. He is currently Associate Professor of Pathology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Staff Pathologist at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is in the Division of Gynecologic Pathology and a member of the division's consult service. His major interests include clinicopathologic studies of ovarian tumors. In addition, Dr. Vang has experience in diagnostic surgical pathology of the breast.
