Carol Riley, RN., MSN., CRNP
Medical Oncology Nurse Practitioner

Carol received her BSN. from Towson State University in 1987. She then began working in the Oncology Center at Johns Hopkins on a solid tumor/bone marrow transplant unit. After eight years as a senior clinical nurse, Carol pursued her graduate program at Johns Hopkins University. She graduated in 1998 and obtained her Nurse Practitioner certification. Carol began working in the breast center with the medical oncology group in October or 1998. Carol provides support, education, and medical care for patients receiving drug treatments; including chemotherapy, hormonal therapies, and biologic therapies

Lillie Shockney, R.N., M.A.S.

Mrs. Lillie Shockney is a registered nurse with a BS degree in HealthCare Administration from Saint Joseph's College and a Masters in Administrative Science from the Johns Hopkins University. She has worked at Johns Hopkins since 1983 and served as the Administrative Director since 1997, responsible for the quality of care programs,patient education programs, survivor volunteer team, community outreach at a local, regional and national level, webmaster, and patient advocacy.

Mrs. Shockney is a published author on the subject of breast cancer as well as a nationally recognized public speaker on the subject. She has written eight books and many articles on this subject. She serves on the medical advisory board of several national breast cancer organizations and is the co-founder and vice president of a national non-profit organization called "Mothers Supporting Daughters with Breast Cancer."

She is also the recipient of the Global Business Leadership award, numerous community service awards, was the recipient of the Outstanding Women of American Award, in 1997 was awarded the Distinguished Graduate for Lifetime Achievement Award and in 1998 received the National Silver Medal Award from the National Consumer Health Information Center. In 1999 she was the recipient of the National Circle of Life Award and the American Cancer Society's Voice of Hope Award; In 2001, she was the recipient of the ACS Lane Adams Award for Excellence in Caring; In 2000, she was selected as an "Unsung Hero" for breast cancer by Pharmacia & Upjohn's 2001 calendar. She also received the 2001 Lane A. Adams Award for Excellence in Caring from the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Lillie Shockney has also received the 2002 Faces of Breast Cancer, ACS, and 2002 Oncology Nursing Society Award for Excellence in Breast Cancer Education awards. In 2003 she was the recipient of the Impact Award from the National Consortium of Breast Centers. She also was the recipient of the Komen Award from the Maryland Affiliate in 2003 as well. In 2004 she was a finalist for the Lance Armstrong Foundation's Spirit of Survivorship award and also was selected as one of the Top 100 Women in Maryland for her leadership and community service efforts. Mrs. Shockney was selected by the Komen Foundation, nationally, to receive the 2005 Professor of Survivorship Award. In 2006 she was the recipient of the Spirit of Friends Award from Food & Friends and the Avon Foundation., and also received the Patient of Courage Award from the American Plastic Surgery Society. Mrs. Shockney was the recipient of the 2007 Yoplait Breast Cancer Champion award. 2009 ONS Excellence in Survivor Advocacy Award and also in 2009 she received the Maryland Daily Record Healthcare Hero - Nursing Excellence Award.

In 2008, the Johns Hopkins Board of Trustees made a decision to appoint her to a chair as a University Distinguished Service Assistant Professor of Breast Cancer. This is the first time in the history of the institution that a hospital nurse has been appointed to a distinguished service designation.

She serves as Ask an Expert for several breast cancer websites including Yahoo.com and the Johns Hopkins Breast Center's website. She chairs the National Consortium of Breast Centers QI Task Force. Mrs.Shockney also holds a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor in the Depts of Surgery and Gynecology, witnin the JHU School of Medicine and is an active clinical researcher with a focus on quality of life issues for survivors.

Deborah Stewart, RN., BSN
RN/Breast Health Educator

As RN/Breast Health Educator for the Breast Center, Deborah Stewart is able to support patients and their families from the perspective of nurse and long time breast cancer survivor. Debby was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in 1979 at the age of 25 and again 20 years later.

Debby is a registered nurse with a B.S. degree in nursing from the University of Maryland. Her career included roles as clinical nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital and nurse educator in the Baltimore area. After her second breast cancer experience in 1999, Debby returned to Hopkins as a member of the Breast Center's Survivor Volunteer Team supporting women newly diagnosed with breast cancer.

In October, 2003, in a position funded by Avon Foundation, Debby extended her role of patient support in the position of Nurse/Breast Health Educator for the Breast Center. Support and advocacy for the underserved population is her special interest. In addition to nurse and health educator roles, Debby is coordinator of the Breast Center Volunteer program. Debby speaks locally through Hopkins Breast Center and for the American Cancer Society. As a way to promote clinical research and patient support funding, Debby also participates in the Avon 2 Day Walk for Breast Cancer and has been team captain for the Center's team since 2004.


Kyle Terrell, CRNP, MS, OCN
Breast Surgical Oncology Nurse Practitioner

Kyle Terrell, CRNP, MS, OCN Kyle received her BS in Nursing in 1994 from the University of Maryland at Baltimore. Following graduation she worked as a clinical nurse in the Department of Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She later returned to the University of Maryland and in 1999 completed the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program with a focus in Oncology Nursing. Prior to her nursing education, Kyle had completed a BA in English and Psychology in 1976 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling in 1978 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Kyle is an oncology certified nurse (OCN) and has worked in the Breast Center since 1999. She provides education, support, and clinical care for surgical patients.


Constance Ziegfeld, MS., RN
Clinical Specialist/Case Manager

Connie has worked in oncology since 1975, and exclusively in the area of breast cancer screening and detection since 1980. Her undergraduate degree is from Towson University, and her graduate degree is from the University of Maryland. In addition to administrative and education roles, she has been an active clinician with the JHH breast program since 1980. Connie has also taught and written about oncology nursing care. She provides clinical breast examinations and education in the Breast Evaluation Program (BEP) and the Breast and Ovarian Survaillence Service (BOSS).
