Avon Walk in DC, April 2006
The Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center was well represented by 21 walkers and more than 20 cheerleaders at the annual 2 day Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Washington DC on April 29, 30, 2006. The team of walkers was spirited and committed; their ages ranged from 26 to 56, some are breast cancer survivors, some are Hopkins patients. Everyone walked to honor or remember their mothers, aunts, grandmothers, family and friends effected by breast cancer. Collectively, the team raised over $55, 000 for Avon Foundation. The 20 cheerleaders enjoyed the weekend waving pompoms and offering words of encouragement for all passing by. The team and the cheerleaders were easily identifiable wearing their pink cowgirl hats. On Sunday, the walk ended with the walkers joining hands to walk across the finish line symbolizing their comraderie and shared committment and celebrating their accomplishment. The closing ceremony included Drs. Davidson and Sukamar accepting 2 large grants supporting breast cancer research at Johns Hopkins. The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, Washington DC, 2006, was a great event with an awesome team! Words seen at the race: We walk because we can...and because we can't walk away.
