| 02/11/2003 | Sentinel node biopsy involves identifying which lymph node,if breast cancer has traveled from the breast to the axillary nodes, has traveled to first. this is known also as the guard node. By identifying it and removing it the pathologist can check for cancer cells-- if none present than the theory is that the other nodes also would be negative for cance. Internal mammary nodes-- inframammary is sometimes what they are called-- are not axillary nodes but nodes medially in the chest--- toward the sternum (breast bone). Sometimes breast cancer travels to these as well or instead but it is unusual to see-- axillary nodes is the more common place for them to go to. | ||
Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
