| 04/13/2003 | The method of determining if the lumpectomy was "successful" or not is by pathology who determines the type of cancer and whether clear margins were achieved. If an operation as performed on the breast without knowing if there was cancer inside then it would be considered a biopsy procedure and not a lumpectomy. Ask your doctor for more information to exactly what you had done and what the pathology shows. If still without information consider having your pathology slides reviewed elsewhere to help answer this question along with your mammograms that apparently showed something that warranted further investigation. | ||
Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
