2/16/20062-16-06 My mother age 63 was diagnosed with invasive duct carcinoma yesterday (no history or breast cancer in faimly) in the right breast. Surgeon removed tumor 2.5cm now the decision to be made is whether to do a lumpectomy or masectomy. Surgeon says he would recommend a lumpectomy. he says no greater chance one versus the other. We've heard many different opinions regarding this. Can't seem to get any info on whether one procedure is better than the other and surgeon is wanting to do surgery Monday 2-20-2006. Please advise on where we should go from here.

Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
