3/16/2008I have stage 1 breast cancer. Originally, the plan was for a lumpectomy and then radiation. 15 years ago, I was treated with radiation for a non-hodgkins lymphoma growth in the armpit area of the same side as the breast that now has the cancer. The doctor says I can't have radiation now but should have the breast removed. I am 78 years old. Why can't the radiation be done again? It was only done in the armpit area never to the breast.

3/16/2008the body has a limit on the amount of radiation it can have to any specific area. you have had your quota for your chest area. so the standard of care is usually to do mastectomy. however you are 78. there are some studies that show that radiation may not be needed for women over 70 with very small breast cancers and wide margins. inquire about this.

Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
