2/26/2010Hi My my 76 year old mother was just diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. She has had a recommendation to have the tumor removed and six weeks of radiation therapy every day. Stage 1 is early stage. Is the 6 weeks as a precaution? Or is that the norm? What are the side effects of radiation? What can I do as her daighter for support?

2/26/2010clear margins are key. depending on the grade, hormone receptors and size of tumor, a radiation oncologist may or may not recommend radiation.this is due to a research study published a few years ago showing that radiation may not be necessary for women over 70. there are different protocols too for radiation. 6 weeks. 3 weeks. even 1-2 weeks. take her to meet with a radiation oncologist for a formal consultation. fatigue is the primary side effect.L
