3/5/2010How soon before undergoing an IVF cycle with letrozole do I need to stop my Tamoxifen? I am planning to start the Tamoxifen in a few days and stop it once I am ready for the IVF procedure in a few months. My husaband and I are working on the financing. I will then resume taking it after our embryos are successfully frozen.

3/6/2010That's a discussion you will have to have with your fertility doctor and oncologist. THere is no absolute right or wrong answer here, and tamoxifen has been known to have pro-fertility effects on some women! Generally speaking however, for elective surgeries (not IVF) we typically ask women to stop tamoxifen 1 to 2 weeks in advance due to the long half life. Best wishes.

Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
