4/20/2010Hello, my mom was diagnosed with ICD about three weeks ago, she is going to a large breast cancer treatment center on the west coast for treatment. She is scheduled for her lumpectomy and sentinle node biopsy on may 21st, about 6 weeks after meeting with the surgeon. Is this ok to wait this long? They said they have many women waiting and not enough doctors. I'm just worried about it spreading in that time. Thank you!!!

4/21/2010It is usually okay, but if she has more aggressive features on her biopsy, (high grade, triple negative disease etc.), then she may want to see if that could be bumped up or be seen elsewhere. Best wishes.

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
