| 6/22/2010 | Three and a half years after my diagnosis for Stage III BC and a bilateral mastectomy followed by chemo and radiation, I am ready for reconstruction. I want to do DIEP. I have met with Dr. Crisera at UCLA. I was very impressed with him. But, he indicated that sometimes it is not possible to do a DIEP and, in that case, they do a muscle sparing free TRAM flap. Is this typical? | ||

| 6/22/2010 | can't speak for other facilities or physicians but it is NOT typical at Hopkins. We do DIEPs on women who have had radiation for stage III cancer like yourself. explore the frequency with which this has happened there and inquire exactly how many bilateral DIEP flap reconstructions have been done as delayed reconstruction for women who have had chest wall radiation. that will help you decide further how you want to proceed. | ||

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
