10/3/2010My mother is 80 yrs old, BRCA1 positive, and no history of cancer. I tested negative for BRCA 1 and 2 also no history of cancer. I think my brother should get BRCA tested for himself and for the sake of his daughter who is 25. My mother says not to worry him. Do you think I'm out of line mentioning this to my brother and/or niece? Just wanted your opinion. Thanks for all your help.

10/3/2010it is important for him to consider testing, especially given he has a daughter. men who carry a BRCA gene have a 6% risk of getting breast cancer; but women have up to an 80% risk. 50% if the next generation end up carrying the gene. talk to him about it. makes sense to pursue it.

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
