| 10/5/2010 | I had breast cancer this April and had both breasts removed. I also had the BRCA 1 test and it came back negative. I did not have the second test because the insurance would not cover the cost. The genetic counselor I spoke to said I would not need to have the second test but other breast cancer patients have told me differently. What are your thoughts on taking the second test? Do I still have a higher risk of ovarian cancer. I really have never got a good answer to whether or not I need to remove my ovaries to avoid ovarian cancerThanks | ||

| 10/5/2010 | if you are referring to BRCA 2 gene testing, it is to be done together with the BRCA 1 test. even without testing positive, women who have had breast cancer do carry a higher rate than the average population of getting ovarian cancer, but not enough that usually results in a decision to remove one's ovaries unless there is a family history of ovarian cancer in the family. | ||

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
