12/4/2010Hello,I have BRCA2--got the result after a diagnosis of dcis-I am 41 and have already had a dblmast with reconstruction. Now thinking of getting a bso-my transvaginal was normal as is my ca125. However,I am wondering if I have left it to late. Is it true the optimum age for bso is 40 especially after having breast cancer? I should mention that I was diagnosed at the age of 40.Truth be known I am quite scared of doing the BSO and waking up and being told I have cancer. Thanks

12/5/2010no optimal age per se so go ahea and pursue this now. What you might have read and misinterpretted perhaps is that most women have this operation around the age of 40 because that is commonly when they have completed child bearing.

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input.
