|3/24/2011||Does Herceptin alone do anything for metastatic disease? I do not want to do gemzar.|

|3/24/2011||As you know, Herceptin is effective only in the treatment of tumors that overexpress HER2 (HER-2/neu positive). Therapy with Herceptin alone is for patients who have already received other chemotherapy regimens, and combination therapy is used in patients who have not previously received chemotherapy.Clinical trials have shown that the treatment combination of Gemzar and Herceptin appears to produce high anti-cancer response rates and is well tolerated in patients with HER2-positive, metastatic breast cancer. Please talk with you medical oncologist about your concerns and the possibility of other options. Best wishes.|
Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
