5/24/2011I am having a mx with expander on June 9 at MSKCC. Have not talked with ps yet, but my surgeon is suggesting an eventual implant. I'm thinking about the DIEP. However, about 5 years ago I had fat taken from my abdomen by injection, and then injected into my face, in a cosmetic procedure. Will this prevent me from having a DIEP? Thanks

5/24/2011Thanks for turning to the Breast Center @ Johns Hopkins. The DIEP flap would not fdepend so much on how much fat removed from tummy then, but how much fat remains to adequately be used for the DIEP. Only a plastic reconstructive surgeon trained in the DIEP would be able to evaluate your tummy and see if suitable for the DIEP. That being said, we also perform other tissue flaps that utilize other areas of the body, such as the SGAP, which takes tissue from upper buttocks, the TUG, tissue from inside the thigh, and the Latissimus dorsi flap, tissue from the back. Please consult with a Board Certified highly trained and experienced plastic reconstructive surgeon before consenting to any autologous (your own tissue) reconstruction. We would be happy to see you here ... call Shelia @ 443-287-BRST (2778). Thank you and best wishes!

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input.
