6/30/2011I had a Breast MRI and it showed a questionable lesion 4x3mm at 3 o'clock on my breast. I am considering having Dr. Tsangaris to a double lumpectomy if the MRI guided biopsy comes out malignant. If the Sentinel node comes out negative will I just need Radiation and Hormone Therapy(I am receptor positive)and no chemo?

6/30/2011Radiation would still be warranted since lumpectomy and radiation are treatment modalities that go together.Hormone therapy also would be recommended if receptor positive. Whether chemo is recommended depends on more pathology information learned from the surgery. chemo decisions are totally unrelated to whether a patient has lumpectomy vs mastectomy. Radiation in this specific clinical scenario is not needed for those having mastectomy.

Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
