8/18/2011My mother "apparently" had Inflammatory Breast Cancer at 44 and died at 46. My maternal grandma had ovarian cancer in her 50's. I have not been genetically tested and the testing wasn't avaialable when my mom was sick. What does that do for my chances? I'm 27 right now and currently waiting to have a biopsy done on a painful mass in my right breast. I'm very worried about this and the doctor wasn't as reassuring as I was hoping. What are my odds here?

8/18/2011Thank you for turning to the Johns Hopkins Breast Center. Based on family history, you should consider genetic counseling and testing, regardless of results from your upcoming biopsy. Consider an appoinment @ a Comprehensive Breast Center in your area, where you will be evaluated by breast health experts, including genetic counselor. Hope this helps, and best wishes!

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
