9/13/2011Hi... can someone help me interpret my breast pathology?(CORE NEEDLE, PALPATION GUIDED)

It says: Portions of benign breast tissue focally showing stromal hyalinization with some changes suggestive of a fibroadenomatous lesion.

My breast surgeon seems to think this is a fibroadenoma diagnosis. But the pathology sounds more suggestive than confident. How definitive is this? How confident can I be with this given the risk of sampling error?

9/14/2011Thanks for turning to the Johns Hopkins Breast Center! From what you have shared, your pathology report is very favorable, with benign findings. There is no indication of cancer, or even atypical cells. You could request your pathology slides be sent for another opinion if that would ease your mind. Hope this helps and best wishes!

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
