| 10/12/2011 | I had atypical cells removed two years ago in my left breast, and have had yearly mammograms as well as two breast MRI's over the last two years. It's time to schedule my yearly mammogram but I'm wondering if I should schedule a molecular breast imaging test. I understand this test uses gamma rays, and is more effective than mammography in detecting cancer in women who have dense breasts. Is this test done at Hopkins? I live in northern VA. | ||

| 10/12/2011 | We do not do the molecular breast imaging here @ JH. If concerned about risk of breast cancer with finding of atypical cells, consult with a breast medical oncologist regarding some preventive measures, such as hormonal therapy. We would advise you continue with yearly breast imaging, clinical breast exams, and self breast awareness practice. | ||

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center.
