| 10/13/2011 | my maternal aunt had breast cancer and has undergone a double mastectomy. I have recently had open excisional surgery where lcis was found. My aunt had the BRCA test done and it came back negative. Should I have the genetic test done as well or are her results sufficient for me? | ||

| 10/14/2011 | If she is negative then it would be assumed that you too would be negative. so there is something familial going on but not necessarily caused by BRCA 1 or 2 genes. you should be followed in a high risk clinic now. glad that no cancer was found for you. there are ways to reduce your risk, for example, the drug tamoxifen. | ||
Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
