10/26/2011Oh my, there is always the option to decline breast surgey, but that is not in your best interest if you have breast cancer and need the surgery to remove the cancer. So please don't avoid or refuse breast cancer surgery. You could seek a second opinion with a breast surgical oncologist and discuss other surgical options...not knowing your specifics, it may be possible that you could undergo a lumpectomy, but again a second opinion can clarify that for you. Also, before mastectomy you should consult with a breast plastic reconstructive surgeon to discuss reconstruction options. I'm so sorry you are approaching your upcoming surgery with fear, but we understand that losing a breast can be very difficult. Try and stay strong and know you are moving towards the rest of your life.

Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
