| 10/31/2011 | My path report indicated"ëxtensive LCIS"thoughout tumor. How do they determine tumor size when this is the case? What impact does it have on outcome? | ||

| 10/31/2011 | Tumor size can be determined by pre-operative breast imaging such as mammogram, ultrasound and MRI. It is also determined by pathology once it has been removed from the breast, and is measured. The tumor is the 'container'...the LCIS is what was in the 'container'...so most of the container (tumor) was filled with LCIS. LCIS, lobular carcinoma in situ, is not a cancer, despite having 'carcinoma' in it's name. A finding of LCIS can put a woman at higher risk for breast cancer however. Hope this helps and best wishes. | ||
Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
