11/8/2011Hi sorry to ask another question, but my surgeon is doing a core needle biopsy without imaging because there is no imaging. My mass does not show up on ultrasound and I'm too young for mammogram. Can I be confident in this procedure? It's okay if you can't answer that. I'm just looking for advice on whether this will be an accurate way to diagnose a palpable mass. Thank you.

11/8/2011I must give the same answer again...we would not perform core needle biopsy without imaging. If a mass is large enough to palpate, why does it not show up on ultrasound. Is there no adequate imaging machines or facilities where you live? I would say this is not an accurate way to diagnose a palpable mass.

Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
