11/17/201155 yrs old, I recently had a mammogram indicating microcalcifications. I went to a local breast care center today and will be getting a MRI and biopsy. I have dense breasts. I have had the CREST form of scleroderma for 16 yrs, few symptoms. if it is cancer the surgeon informed me radiation may not be an option. Is that true and is this something I should come to a place like Hopkins for?
thank you .

11/18/2011Thank you for turning to the Johns Hopkins Breast Center. The key words you used was "may not be able to" receive radiation. So not an automatic No or Yes for your question. Seek a formal opinion, once your biopsy results are known, at an NCI designated Cancer Center, and consult with a breast surgical, radiation and medical oncologist. Other factors will enter into your surgical decision making as well as the history of scleroderma. If we can help, please call Sheila @ 443-287-BRST (2778) for an appointment. Hope this helps and best wishes.

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
