11/20/2011I was diagnosed with atpical ductal hyperplasia and because of a big history of breast cancer, my Mother and 3 Sisters, I had a bilateral mastectomy. I have also had a complete hysterectomy 5 years ago. I am now recommended to take vagifem for dryness and I am wondering if this is a very high risk for me.

11/20/2011Thank you for turning to the Johns Hopkins Breast Center. Vagifem contains estrogen. Most breast cancers are estrogen driven. You state you have a very strong family history, strong enough to be concerned to take measures once you were diagnosed with ADH. So don't know if taking Vagifem puts you individually a a very high risk, but certainly appears it could place you at risk. Please consult with a breast medical oncologist before you begin using the vagifem. Also, you could seek a consultation with a genetic counselor who could asses your risk based on complete history of you, and your family, including your mom and dad's. Hope this helps and best wishes!

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
