12/22/2011I was wrongfully diagnossed with LCIS, i went through 3 weeks of the radiation ,what is the long term damage done to the good tissue, and what should i watch for?

12/23/2011It depends on the # of rads administered, and what tissue as included in the radiation field (ie, was heart and lung exposed). Overall, for women needing radiation, it is well tolerated and doesn't usually pose a long risk problem for most women. there is no data however regardig what issues may arise in the future for someone getting radiation for 3 weeks. meet with the radiation oncologist now to discuss this further. you have the right to know.

Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
