1/2/2012Careful effort is required to do needle biopsies and obtain clear margins (surgery) for a BC tumor. Will cutting into the cancer (particularly if it has made the biological morphosis required to spread to lymph nodes and travel) during surgery give the cancer an opportunity to spread either within the breast or reoccur due to distant metastasis (via the vascular system?) What if a large hematoma forms after the excision and a mastectomy not performed to remove the breast (with positive BC margins and hematoma) for a week ? Can the hematoma (possibly with BC cells in it from surgery) and bc that has been cut into (positive margins) spread the cancer?

1/2/2012All common questions that women inquire about and thankfully these things do not cause the cancer to spread.

Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
