2/27/2012I was diagnosed with LCIS after a biopsy was routinely done during a breast reduction. I am 39 and have no family history of breast cancer besides a great aunt. I've been advised to start taking tamoxifin but have heard that the side effects are aweful for a pre menapausal woman. Was wondering what your advice would be?

2/28/2012it's important to begin with a thorough genetics counseling session to determine what other risk factors you might have already, even unrelated to family history, to determine what your true risk of developing breast cancer one day might be. By doing so, you can then make a better informed decision regarding whether you want to take tamoxifen or not. Tamoxifen cuts risk in half so it is highly effective for those opting to take it. Not all women develop side effects either.

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
