| 3/10/2012 | I am a 39 year old woman (whose mother had breast cancer at 40 and maternal grandmother had it later in life) who just had her 2nd biopsy on her left breast. A year and a half ago they did a biopsy on a 2mm spot and this time it was an 8mm spot. I just had it done Thursday 3/8 and I am returning next week. I was just wondering if you think I should have the genetic testing done that my breast surgeon recommended? I have read differing opinions. Also is there any specific questions i should ask this Thursday when I return to the breast doctor? | ||

| 3/10/2012 | Thank you for turning to the Johns Hopkins Breast Center. Goodness, 2mm and 8 mm are extremely small lesions. With your strong family history, yes, consider both genetic counseling and testing with a Breast Cancer Genetic Counselor. (Do not advise just having a blood test only). The counseling is a very important part of the process. Hope this helps and best wishes. | ||
Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
