3/13/2012I finished treatment for breast cancer about 5 years ago. I'm 50 years old now and a few days ago developed shingles on my previously irradiated skin. (I had reconstruction with silicone implant after mastectomy) Are there any special precautions I should take? I am already on an antiviral drug? Should I be concerned about lymphedema in that arm also since I had all of my lymph nodes removed under that arm?

3/14/2012Good questions. Since shigles is an inflammatory process that could 'kick' the lymphatic system into gear, just be vigilant about any increased swelling in the arm of the affected side. Does not mean you will develope. Hope this helps and best wishes.

Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
