4/5/2012How does one look and function if one decides to not replace their silicone implants ~10 yrs down the road? On 2/22/12 had BMX with immed TE (am too thin to qualify for options like DIEP), and am still in filling/expansion stage. Would the the decade-long expanded pectoral muscles then become lumpy/loose within, and would one lose strength, upon implant removal? Am 39 now, looking ahead to 49, 59 (and more!), but understand these implants have a "lifespan"of their own.

4/5/2012So not all implants spontaneously rupture over time. the implant may remain fine and you look fine. if it leaped it must be surgically removed.vthe chest muscle would remain stretched for the most part.

Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
