4/11/2012I have had two excisional biopsies with no clear margins and DCIS on right. I plan to have a double mastectomy. When I asked my surgeon whether I should do a sentinel node biopsy prior to the mastectomies, he said in this case it was unnecessary / not an invasive enough cancer. If more cancer / differenct kind of cancer is found post op by pathology, will I then need an axillary node dissection?

4/11/2012you are correct to be asking this question and correct that you'd have to default to an ax dissection if pathology found invasive cells among the remaining breast tissue. if you want to come to us, we are happy to help you. you need a breast surgical oncologist and a breast reconstruction surgeon. just call 443-287-2778.

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
