4/20/2012Hi, I am wondering what is/are the main advantage/s in following a long hormonal therapy rather than going for an ovariectomy or inactivation by radiations when no pregnancy is desired after the cure. Thanks and Best regards,

4/21/2012Hormonal therapy, either tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor, with ER positve breast cancer, is the standard of care, to decrease risk of recurrence, and development new primary of ER positive breast cancer. Removal of ovaries, or supression of ovarian function is helpful, but women continue to produce estrogen (the adrenal glands for example) after. So a woman could have surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, ovaries removed, and it would still be standard of care to receive hormonal therapy. Hope this helps and best wishes!

Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
