| 4/24/2012 | I recently underwent mammography which showed an ovoid lesion. I then had spot compression views which failed to reveal a density. I still had to have an ultrasound which again did not reveal a density. I am thankful but still very anxious. Worry as to why something was there initially. I am to return in six months for diagnostic mammography. | ||

| 4/25/2012 | Screening mammograms are the 'first line of defense' in identifying 'something different'. They are visual aids, but not diagnostic. Next step is additional imaging, diagnostic views with mammo including spot compression, and ultrasound. It is common, that with additional views and imaging, nothing is seen, so follow up in 6 months is appropriate. Hope this helps. | ||

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input.
