4/25/2012Do we know the reccurence rates for early breast cancer treated with Tamoxifen alone and Tamoxifen together with ovarian suppression?

4/25/2012Yes, we do know that overall the risk of recurrence rates are lower with use of hormonal therapy (tamoxifen, AI),with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (removal of ovaries), or ovarian supression Risk of recurrence depends on other factors as well, including age, genetic mutation, tumor characteristics, and whether appropriate local contol was acheived (type of surgery, radiation tx). For example, for women with hereditary breast cancer, BRCA 1/2 carriers, under age of 50, who under go bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy have a significant reduction in their breast cancer risk, as does the use of tamoxifen in under 50 yo BRCA 1/2 carriers.

There are many studies with data regarding this topic, and recommendation for you would be to consult formally with a breast medical oncologist to discuss this subject as relates specifically to you.
