| 5/1/2012 | I had a negative mammogram, but on the screening ultrasound a TDLU was found. The Radiologist wants to do a vacuum biopsy. Another Radiologist recommends they usually leave TDLU's alone, and at most do a follow-up. What are your guidlines? Thank you. | ||

| 5/1/2012 | Terminal duct lobular units are a normal part of the anatomy of breast tissue. If a radiologist sees something that warrants biopsy due to it appearing abnormal and potentially of concern then a core biopsy is usually performed with ultrasound guidance. There must have been something seen or felt on the mammogram that resulted in the doctor then doing an ultrasound. | ||
Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
