5/7/2012I was just diagnosed with IDC. The first thing my doctor wants to do is schedule an MRI to see if there's anything else that might have been missed during the mammogram and ultrasound. Is this the normal protocol? I'm just concerned that this will hold up everything else. Thanks.

5/7/2012If the radiologist believes that your breast tissue is very dense and would be difficult to confirm that what has been biopsied is all that is of concern, then an MRI is usually recommended. So inquire about this. Some doctors order it for everyone but the standard of care for its usage was not intended to be for everyone diagnosed with a breast cancer.

Please note: This service is not intended to provide primary medical advice concerning specific medical care or treatment. Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input. These individuals volunteer their time for this service and will respond as soon as they are able. Please do not post or send the same question to us in multiple locations or categories.
