| 5/15/2012 | I am a 61 y.o. post menopausal female diagnosed with intermediate grade DCIS Stage 0. ER+/PR+ No family history. Had lumpectomy with clear margins and SAVI radiation. Medical oncologist is recommending AI's for 5 years. I was told by my radiation oncologist that my risk of recurrence in the current breast without taking AI's is 3.4% in the next 5 years. What is my risk of invasive breast cancer in the opposite breast without taking the AI's? And have there been any studies on the supplement DIM? If someone had the same scenario as me only had ER-/PR-, would their risk of recurrence/invasive breast cancer be the same? | ||

| 5/16/2012 | one of the curious things about DCIS is that when local recurrence happens it is not unusual to see that it returns as invasive ductal carcinoma. not sure why though. The local recurrence rate given to you sounds very low so am not sure what this is based on. risk for opposite breast is usually between 5-10% on average. hormonal therapy is designed to reduce risk by 50% of whatever that risk is. inquire again how the 3.4% was determined. the only research i could find associated with this specific device used for bracytherapy radiation and showing recurrence rates is here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=SAVI%20radiation%20breast%20recurrence Note however that it was less than 2 year follow up on the first 100 patients, published last year showing a 1% recurrence in less than 2 year time frame. | ||

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center.
