5/24/2012Just recently after my mammogram, they wanted to have another done, and then deciced to do a ultrasound on my left breast. The doctor said the ultrasound shows a small cyst but she feels it is nothing and wants me back in 6 months for another checkup. Is this normal or am I taking a chance that in six months it could be worse. Should I get a second opinion? Thanks

5/24/2012First, be sure that the radiologist is a breast imaging radiologist (and not a general radiologist). This will increase the likelihood tha what is being reported from your breast imaging studies is accurate. cysts are common and the best way to evaluate them is using ultrasound. sounds like that was the finding and yes the standard of care is to return in 6 months for imaging again. if no changes then resume annual mammography.

Ask an Expert is a free service operated by health care professionals at the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center. Due to the volume of questions and their complexity, there are times when medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists or oncology nurses are consulted for their input.
